You will have greater success and long-term weight loss if you continue to eat a variety of foods. Keep calories in a healthy range for your body weight. The U.S. Department of Agriculture suggests that 55 percent of your calories come from complex carbohydrates, 18 percent from protein and 29 percent from fat. The USDA recommends that women consume between 1,600 and 2,400 calories daily, depending on age, weight and activity level. Men should stick to between 1,800 and 2,600 calories.

Estimate your basal metabolic rate (BMR) and daily calorie requirements using the Harris-Benedict Principle, using an online calculator or formula based on your weight, height and age, then factor in activity level, whether sedentary or slightly, moderately or very active. This number will denote your daily recommended intake of calories per day to maintain your weight.

Hydration is an important influence in success on a personal trainer diet. Drink eight, 8-ounce glasses of water each day. Add another 8 ounces for every 10 pounds you have to lose, but do not exceed 15 glasses day. Don’t confuse being thirsty with being hungry. The “Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism” published a study in 2003 concluding that dehydration can cause hunger pangs. Drink a glass of water before snacking to see if this satisfied your hunger.
